老朱（郎雄 饰）是个丧失味觉的国宴大厨，他有三位个性迥异的女儿：大女儿家珍（杨贵媚 饰）笃信基督教，自从母亲过世后，身为长女的她扛起母职，将自己奉献给家庭；老二家倩（吴倩莲 饰）担任航空公司高阶主管，精明干练，拥有遗传自老爸的厨艺，却不进自家厨房，一心只想买屋离家；小女儿家宁（王渝文 饰）则是大学生，正是情窦初开的年纪。为了每周一次的家庭聚餐，老朱精心准备满桌丰盛菜肴，但女儿们各有心事，让两代冲突总是浮上台面。直到邻居锦荣（张艾嘉 饰）的母亲梁老太太自美国回来，每个人的生活逐渐有了变化……

本片与李安的其他两部电影《推手》、《囍宴》，皆由演员郎雄主演，深刻描写父亲形象、并探讨儒家传统中的家庭冲突，名列为「家庭三部曲」。《饮食男女》透过李安导演的喜剧手法，在象征团聚的「餐厅圆桌」上，细腻刻划两代亲情问题。此片双双入围金球奖和奥斯卡奖最佳外语片，也是坎城影展「导演双周」中，首部成为开幕片的华语电影。

Chu is a master chef who has lost his sense of taste.
